TOPCon technology was developed to improve the efficiency limits of older solar cell technologies like Poly, Mono, and even PERC. The concept of TOPCon was first introduced by Fraunhofer ISE, Germany, around 2013. At that time, it was mainly a research technology. After 2020, with the demand for higher efficiency panels, big solar manufacturers started adopting TOPCon for mass production. Today, it is one of the most advanced and widely accepted technologies in the solar industry.

Let’s understand it in a simple way.

In a normal solar cell:

• Sunlight creates electrons.

• These electrons try to move toward the output.

• Some electrons get lost on the way due to internal resistance and recombination.

In a TOPCon solar cell:

• A very thin tunnel oxide layer is added.

• A special doped polysilicon layer is placed above it.

• These layers act like a protective and guiding path for electrons.

This structure:

• Makes the cell more stable for long-term use

• Normal cell = rough road with speed breakers

That is why TOPCon is called a passivated contact technology.
“Passivated” means protected, and “contact” means the point where electricity is collected.
